The Books of February
Feb. 28th, 2006 10:02 pmAnother ecclectic month. Classics, profundity, adventure and fluff. For being released by a Romance line, Eileen Wilk's urban fantasy world-building isn't bad at all. And "Urban Shaman" by C.E. Murphy read like Stephanie Plum discovering Magic, very cute. Poul Anderson's Time Patrol is quite nice even upon multiple re-reading (he uses somewhat obscure eras to great effect) but, while some of the idea were interesting, I couldn't really get into Fredrick Pohl's "Gateway". Wolf Star by R.M. Meluch was particularly interesting as, at the end of the first book, the slate was wiped clean by a time travel paradox. In book two, everything happens again, different but the same. Stuff that occured _before_ the first novel happens _in_ the second one, even though #2 definitely comes _after_ the events of #1. Very confusing, but quite entertaining. "Tea With the Black Dragon" was charming, if out-dated and my one piece of nonfiction, "Zamba" tugged the heartstrings on every other page and made me want to go out and get a lion of my very own (the philosophy and metaphysics were annoying interjections, however)
And, of course, the Fionavar Tapestry was amazing.
Blood Rites, Jim Butcher
Night Train to Rigel, Timothy Zahn
