Just saw "Chronicle of Riddick" tonight with new friend 'S', whom I had not met before in person. Practice must make perfect because it's the most not-awkward I've ever felt on such an occasion.

On a scale from one to ten, this evening was an eight. To put that in perspective, I'm having trouble remembering the last firm seven I ever had. And since nines and tens pretty much never happen in public or on first dates, an eight is nothing to sneeze at. ;-)

The most peculiar thing was how much S resembled someone I knew waaaay back in 2000 at L&C College; a fellow-actress with the unlikely name of Timilin who I had something of a pseudo-crush on (not so strong as adoration from afar as just constant wistful "wouldn't it be nice...?"). It's not a resemblance I'd picked up on from prior photos. Of course, what I'm really doing is comparing to a fuzzy and no-doubt idealized memory from four years ago. And with my knack for faces, four years might as well be forty.

[If you're reading this, S, please don't take offense. It's just one of those uncanny things the mind dwells on when not otherwise engaged. You are both lively and attractive women and I think we can leave it at that. ;-) ]

Riddick was a decent flick, which we heckled continuously. ;-) The individual scenes were all skillfully done and looked great, but the structure as a whole lacked...cohesion. Either that or else the setting was too detailed and introduced too abruptly. Lots of random characters who popped in and out with no arcs or conclusions.

I will say that there was an effect in the movie that impressed me to no end. The Arch-Villian had, among other talents, a knack for super-speed. The fluid manner in which his body left CGI afterimages is the only way The Flash could possibly be portrayed if they made a movie about him (following the superhero movie trend of recent years, though those have all been Marvel's except Batman). Very, very, very cool.

So to recap: decent movie, awesome company...

...and she said she;d like to do it again. ;-0
