Serenity and the Vorkosiverse
Oct. 6th, 2005 10:42 pmOk, I tell a lie. I have a few thoughts tonight.
Despite having read fandom crossovers before, it was only after seeing the movie that I finally _got_ the Bujold/Firefly connection. Maybe it was the broader scope.
First off, River and Mark have got a lot in common. Their black gangs could compare notes. River wears hers on the outside, Mark has learned to keep his within. But Killer is Killer no matter who he belongs to.
Mal and Miles also have a great deal in common. Miles being Miles, he just requires an entire fleet to accomplish what Mal can do with a single ship. But each has created their home. Miles is just lucky enough to have his true home to return to. A scrap of dialogue came to me as I was biking home.

"I don't take much to dancing. I prefer to keep things simple."
"Yes, well, if I could punch a man without breaking every bone in my fist, I'd probably try the simple way more often myself."
"Point taken."
_______________
There isn't a one-to-one mirror image between them, but some of the correspondences _are_ strange. Bothari _is_ Zoe and Jayne combined. Ivan and Wash would take to each other immediately, despite Ivan's puzzlement over Wash's monogamy. Book and the Elder Vorkosigans would understand each other perfectly, Inara and Lady Vorpatril would bond and Kaylee would become Professor Vorthys' treasured niece. The only one left out is Simon...and he tends to leave himself out anyway. Maybe he and Enrique could hang out together, I dunno.
But these are definitely two groups of characters that are very simpatico. I'm surprised it was never sank in before.
