Stirring the hornet's nest
Mar. 22nd, 2004 07:18 pmOy! Everyone remember that letter from a Scientific Creationist I smacked down a month ago or so? The one which claimed that all the tools of science were not enough to make evolution scientific?
Yesterday I posted it to
mock_the_stupid. I figured if anyone would appreciate such idiocy, they would.
Wrong. Dead wrong.
...174 comments later I discover that even people that mock stupidity are sensitive about religious beliefs...even the moronic pseudo-scientific ones. And virtually no one understands what science _is_. Theories, proof, falsifiability...all complete ciphers.
I had to do a _lot_ of educating just on basic concepts, let alone defending my position that Scientific Creationists (as opposed to the purely religious variety) are stupid! Here's hoping at least some of it sank in.
I'm told we even made it to
lj_drama.
My favorite statement, however, came in response to the observation that many early scientists were deeply religious:
"Like when they excommunicated Galileo for saying the world was round?"
...can we spot the two glaring errors in that little sentence?
It appears to be winding down (if I'm lucky), but if anyone is feeling scrappy and wants to Knock Heads for Science, you can find the whole mess here.
That'll teach me to preach it to the masses. ;-)
