End of an Icon or: Good Bye Old Jokes
Jun. 26th, 2003 08:06 pmCNN update: "Former U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina has died at the age of 100, family members said in a statement."
I was actually far more surprised by that announcement than I should have been. On one hand, there are bristlecone pines with less staying power than the former senator. OTOH, we've been having a downward trend on aging celebrities recently.
First there was Brinkley/Peck/Cronyn a few weeks ago and now Uris/Thurmond...
Since bad things come in threes, you just know we're due for another death any time now to round out the triad. Shall we be unspeakably morbid and start a pool?
Tragically, my vote will have to be for Bob Hope.
Does it speak poorly of me that, when first reading the headline about the former senator, a tiny voice in my head chimed in with "It's about time!"?
::sigh::
I think it probably does. :-(
